Cuozzo recorded his first leadership album—Mighty Mike (Savoy)—in November , backed by Eddie Costa (vib), Ronnie Ball (p), Vinnie Burke (b) and Kenny Clarke (d). Cuozzo’s had a Lester Young sound with a Lennie Tristano vibe, delivering a smooth, inventive style on modernist tracks, blues and ballads. Relaxed and engaging.

Mike Cuozzo (ts) Eddie Costa (vibes) Ronnie Ball (p) Vinnie Burke (b) Kenny Clarke (d) This is a terrific mainstream `50s jazz CD, with excellent, swinging playing throughout. Mike Cuozzo is a fine tenorsax man, lyrical with a warm and inviting sound - and he swings, too.

Recorded in , originally issued on LP then reissued by the Japanese label Denon in , and now made available on a digitally remastered CD, Mighty Mike was the tenorman's first album as a leader. It's a set that shows a bit of stylistic ambivalence as Cuozzo.

It's a set that shows a bit of stylistic ambivalence as Cuozzo and the group find themselves moving between bop and mainstream jazz.
